Are Information Technology studies a good option for your studies?
One of the most frequently asked questions young people and their parents make is what professions exactly can really have positive prospects in the coming years, regarding employment. Things in Greece are even more complicated because of the economic crisis we are experiencing the last few years, and because of the fact that many areas like constructions for example have really literally collapsed, therefore less viable options are really available, in a market where about 25-30% of the population remains currently unemployed.
As a parent I am also concerned about the problem, but since my son is only 2 years old, there is still time to remain a bit relaxed and just wait and see how things really go. My youngest cousin on the other hand is 16 years old at the moment and now is actually the time to select his field of studies and what profession he will follow in his life. Since I have been a teacher for over 20 years now, I was asked for my opinion from my cousin and his parents and my answer is without a doubt and second thoughts computing and information technology.
Information Technology may be the future
About two decades ago I was in my cousin’s shoes. I had to select my field of studies, but things were very complicated at that time. Although I really liked computers I could not follow that direction of studies because of how the educational system in Greece worked and its many limitations, so eventually I studied to become a primary school teacher.
If I had the choice then, I would most certainly choose to study computing and information technology at the university. I believe that it would just a big passion of mine back then, but if I had followed that path, I am sure I would be far more satisfied with my job. I would most possibly have a good job in a big company or even run my own business.
The thing is that although I did not study information technology in the university, I actually did it on my own. I read literally hundreds of books over the course of the years and practiced a lot at home during my free time. I learnt computer programming at first and then I went on to learn web programming and mobile application programming.
Just a few years ago I ended up earning just as much money as my day job as a teacher, but could not keep both my jobs since I had no space time for myself and my family anymore. What I am getting at, and what I really advised my cousin is that this field of studies offers tremendous work opportunities, even when we are talking about a market in crisis, like the one right now in Greece.
So, with that said, are Information Technology studies a good option for your studies? My answer for that question is that for me studying Information Technology is the best way to go as far as studies are concerned.
New technologies offer business options
We are living in a world where everything is already digital or is it becoming digital. Our whole life depends on computers and new technologies. A few years ago our car, our cooker or fridge were purely mechanical devices, whereas now everything is operated my microchips and computers and needs to be programmed.
Becoming a programmer is a path to endless possibilities in a digital world. You can choose specialize in one area or just do various smaller programming or other jobs in a variety of systems. These jobs are better paid and the percentage of unemployment is also above most other jobs in other sectors.
What I like more about programming and information technology in general is that you can set up your own business with now effort and practically no cost, with maybe just a computer or laptop. If you are talented in what you are doing you can create miracles that you can sell all over the world, be it services, software, hardware etc. Nowadays the internet is not only a great source of knowledge you can use for free, but an amazing way to market your work and sell your creations all around the world.
